Freeport cinema TIF request scaled back

The development firm that in June pitched opening a movie theater at Freeport Village Station has downsized the amount of tax increment financing it's requesting from the town.

Boston-based Berenson Associates, which opened the 120,000-square-foot retail complex last year, has withdrawn its request for a $550,000 TIF district, and instead will ask the town council to approve a $200,000 TIF district, according to The Times Record. Berenson COO Al Yebba, said the decision came after the company received feedback on the TIF during public information sessions. The new request, which the town council could approve as early as today, would return $20,000 to Berenson per year over a 10-year period, according to the paper.

Berenson Associates is hoping to open the six-screen, 769-seat cinema complex by the first quarter of next year.
