FairPoint vote delayed

Days after Vermont regulators denied FairPoint Communications' proposal to purchase Verizon's landlines in that state, the Maine Public Utilities Commission has postponed its consideration of the sale until next year.

The PUC postponed today's hearing until Jan. 3 because several parties were having trouble returning to Maine the day after Christmas, according to the Bangor Daily News. FairPoint hopes to purchase Verizon's landlines in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont in a $2.7 billion deal. The Maine PUC is set to review a settlement agreement between FairPoint, Verizon and other involved parties.

On Friday, Dec. 21, Vermont's Public Service Board did not approve the sale because of concerns FairPoint would not be financially able to purchase and maintain so many lines, though the board said it could approve the sale if its concerns were addressed, according to the paper. New Hampshire will consider the sale next year, reported the Associated Press.
