First Wind expansion approved

The next phase of the Stetson Wind power project got the go-ahead from state regulators Wednesday.

According to release from First Wind, the company developing the project, the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission approved a 17-turbine, 25.5- megawatt expansion to the original wind power operation in Danforth, in northern Washington County. The 38-turbine, 57-megawatt first phase of the project came on line in January.

Kurt Adams, First Wind's chief development officer and former chairman of Maine's Public Utilities Commission, said the wind project has created approximately 350 jobs and generated $50 million in investment in Maine, according to the release. First Wind also owns and operates the 42-megawatt Mars Hill Wind project in Aroostook County.
