A litigator and former partner at Portland law firm Bernstein Shur, Chad Higgins, has joined Dentons Bingham Greenebaum, a global law firm with dozens of offices in nearly 100 countries, as a Portland-based partner.
Higgins is a member of the commercial litigation practice and represents clients in state and federal courts across the U.S. He focuses on product liability and mass tort matters related to environmental litigation.
He brings more than 20 years of experience to his new position. Higgins has defended businesses across multiple industries, including in lawsuits related to per- and polyfluorinated substances and groundwater contamination matters regarding methyl tertiary butyl ether, a discontinued gasoline additive.
"As Portland and Maine grow, businesses here have national and even global needs,” Higgins told Mainebiz. “Joining Dentons gives my clients access to a global law firm and the benefits of having 160-plus offices in 80-plus countries worldwide.
"Denton’s lawyers can help with everything from protecting what they have already created to growing their businesses. We can serve clients anywhere they are or aspire to be."
In addition to his litigation practice, he counsels consumer products and food and beverage clients on various regulatory and compliance matters involving the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Food and Drug Administration, Federal Trade Commission and California’s Proposition 65.
He also works on consumer class actions related to marketing claims, and with clients in pharmaceuticals, energy and higher education.
“[Higgins] is a seasoned litigator and a valuable resource for our clients who are facing complex and lengthy litigation,” said Andrew Helman, managing partner of the Portland office, which is at One City Center. "He is involved in every step from start to finish and deeply understands the laws, regulations and potential outcomes that can impact our clients. Not only can Chad help clients facing litigation, but he also provides guidance to help organizations manage future risk.
"Adding talent like Chad who can help our clients locally, nationally and globally, is a key focus in our Portland office as we seek to grow our team to better serve our clients with their multijurisdictional needs."
Higgins received his bachelor’s degree from Colby College and his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
He is active in the community, serving as a board member at the Maine Children’s Alliance, the New England Legal Foundation and the Jewish Community Alliance. He has also been a cabinet member of the Colby College Dare Northward Capital Campaign and chair of the Colby College Alumni Council.
“His addition to our litigation team further strengthens its capabilities in New England and across the U.S. as well as our firm’s commitment to delivering excellent legal services to our clients,” said Keith Bice, Dentons' managing partner.
