AUGUSTA -- Maine Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Heather Johnson Thursday announced that former small-business advocate Peggy Schaffer will direct the ConnectME Authority.
Schaffer, of Vassalboro, was most recently a small-business advocate in the Maine secretary of state's office as well as co-chair of the Maine Broadband Coalition, a statewide group advocating for high speed broadband.
Previously, she was chief of staff in the Senate majority office and the Senate president's office. She also worked as legislative liaison for the Department of Economic and Community Development, where she helped develop and implement economic initiatives in the King and Baldacci administrations, according to a news release Thursday announcing her appointment. In that role Schaffer also helped create Maine’s Research and Development infrastructure, according to the release.
“As former director of ConnectME, I am excited to welcome Peggy Schaffer to this role to continue ConnectME’s work to expand broadband infrastructure and build partnerships with communities and businesses to identify needs and opportunities across our state,” Johnson said in the release. “Peggy’s long-standing ties to Maine’s small businesses will be an invaluable asset at ConnectME and I look forward to working with her in the years ahead.”
Schaffer said that she is “thrilled to have this opportunity to join ConnectME at such a pivotal time.”
“I look forward to using my knowledge and experience in economic and community development to help communities and providers come together around the common goal of making sure all Mainers can access affordable, quality, high speed internet connections.”
The ConnectME Authority facilitates the universal availability of broadband to all Maine households and businesses and works to help them understand the valuable role it can play in both their lives and in the broader community.
