A look back: Then, as now, workers were hard to come by

Maine’s labor shortage is nothing new, to read the September 1995 issue of Mainebiz.

Yet one business owner, an importer, seemed to have a particularly hard time finding satisfactory candidates.

“I’ve seen 122 resumes and 10 of them looked decent on paper. I brought all 10 in and not one of them really could do the job,” he told our reporter.

The business owner said he planned to widen his search to labor markets in Boston and New York.

“With at least 30 trade shows a year, these people are on the road a lot,” he added. “Part of the problem is not only finding the right people who have the skills, but who are also willing to spend half the year on the road.”

According to his LinkedIn profile today, the business owner has since relocated to southern California.

Fun Fact: Maine’s iconic Humpty Dumpty chip company got a lift in 1995 when the Finance Authority of Maine guaranteed two bank loans in the amount of $900,000, helping save the chip maker from closure, according to the October 1995 Mainebiz.
