Four Portland businesses have been cited for failing to check identifications when selling alcohol to undercover and under-age inspectors of the Portland Police Department.
On Saturday, April 20, the Portland Police Department conducted liquor sale compliance checks on 32 businesses licensed to sell alcohol. The purpose of these compliance checks was to ensure that businesses are confirming the ages of individuals trying to buy alcoholic beverages.
Out of the 32 businesses that were checked, four did not ask for identification and sold to compliance inspectors who were between 18 to 20 years of age, according to a news release from the Portland Police Department.
The individuals who sold the alcoholic beverage and the businesses where the sales occurred each received administrative summonses for these violations.
Portland Police identified the following businesses as where the violations occurred:
“The reality is that underage drinking can have severe consequences," said Lt. Robert Martin, spokesman for the Portland Police Department. “With prom season fast approaching we hope that all businesses will keep this in mind in order to prevent a tragedy. While we are very happy that the majority of businesses were in compliance, we do not consider this a success. We will continue to do these types of proactive investigations in hopes of achieving 100% compliance.”
To provide information anonymously about suspected sales of alcoholic beverages to under-age buyers, community members can contact the Portland Police Department by text, internet or phone:
