Fraser Timber Inc. will rehire 140 workers when it restarts its sawmill in Masardis on May 26, though a company official said the mill would remain operational for an indefinite period.
The company, a subsidiary of Toronto-based Fraser Papers, needs to restart the Masardis mill to cut wood that was left there when it shut down in early January, according to the Bangor Daily News. However, Bill Peterson, Fraser Papers' director of human resources, told the paper that the low lumber prices, caused by cheap lumber imports and a weak housing market, responsible for Fraser's closure of its sawmills in Masardis and Ashland have not improved enough to guarantee a permanent restart. The Ashland mill remains closed.
Alan Nason, a former employee at the Masardis mill, sued Fraser Timber and Fraser Papers in late January, alleging that Fraser Timber violated federal law by not giving workers enough notice when it laid off almost 200 workers at the Masardis mill in early January. It is unclear if the mill restart will impact the lawsuit, which Fraser has called frivolous, according to the Daily News.
