Geiger lays off 8% of its staff

Geiger, the publisher of promotional products and the Farmers' Almanac, has laid off 30 employees to prepare the company for what it believes will be a rough year.

The layoffs account for roughly 8% of Geiger's 400-person workforce. The layoffs included workers in Geiger's Lewiston headquarters and throughout its 15 field offices across the country, according to the Sun Journal. The company laid off 10 employees in early 2008 in anticipation of a slowdown.

"To me it was trying to acknowledge what we think business is going to be like in 2009 and make sure that we right-size our work force so we're ready for whatever the business is going to be," Peter Geiger, executive vice president, told the newspaper.
