Shingle manufacturer Ecoshel plans to move from Gainesville, Ga., to Ashland as it expands production for a new line of cedar shingles.
Gov. Paul LePage and the state's Department of Economic and Community Development announced the move Tuesday, which they said was supported by a Maine Rural Development Authority loan and financing through the Finance Authority of Maine and other agencies.
The company and state economic development officials expect the production plant at the Levesque Sawmill site on Levesque Mill Road will hire 78 people and the company plans to add 10 more production lines over the next few years at the Maine facility.
In a statement, Ecoshel CEO Bryan Kirkey said the company chose to relocate to Maine to be closer to sources of northern white cedar to manufacture its shingle products. The company recently received a patent for a new line of cedar shingles.
The company is in beta production of its Smart-Shingle System in Gainesville. The move will also allow the company to be closer to New England, which he says is the largest markets for cedar shingles in the country.
The company also plans to import western red cedar for some of its lines of shingles.
