The Portland Development Corp. awarded 10 Portland businesses a total of $100,000 in grant funding from the city's Community Development Block Grant program.
At its December meeting, the Portland Development Corp. announced that each business would receive $10,000 to create a new job.
The awarded businesses include Sur Lie, Belleflower Brewing, Salud Studios, Two Fat Cats, Hunt + Alpine, Burundi Star Coffee, Polish Nail Salon, Driscoll Childcare Center, Cong Tu Bot and Luna.
In a prepared release, the city of Portland said this program will expand economic opportunities and contribute to the local economy.
The city's business program director, Nancy Martin, told Mainebiz that the approved businesses now have nine months to fill the new job openings and the hired employee must remain in the job for a year.
"Using the money will be the easiest part," said Martin. "The hard part for businesses will be finding someone to stay in the job."
Portland City Council will decide to fund another round of grants in the spring. If approved, applications are expected to open in the summer.
