Gravel co., city spar over redevelopment

New Hampshire-based Pike Industries last week pitched a $114 million mixed-use development to Westbrook city officials, but said the development is dependent on its ability to build a controversial asphalt plant in another part of town.

Pike has been trying to build an asphalt plant at its quarry on Spring Street, but a group of resident and businesses, led by Idexx Laboratories, has fought the plan, saying it would hurt their property values and stifle development of Westbrook's high-tech cluster. City councilors, seemingly in agreement, are moving toward rezoning the site to allow only light industrial uses, which would not permit an asphalt plant, according to the Portland Press Herald.

City officials did, however, like Pike's plan to turn an old quarry on Main Street into a $114 million development that would include a 150-room hotel, 250 housing units, 420,000 square feet of retail space and a 20-acre lake. City councilors told the paper they would consider Pike's Spring Street proposal on its own, but would not be influenced by a desire to see the Main Street site developed.

The council is scheduled to meet Feb. 2 to decide whether to refer the rezoning of the Spring Street site to the Planning Board, which would hold public hearings on the matter before making a recommendation to the council, according to the paper.
