Groups vie for new gambling opportunities

Passamaquoddy tribal members, members of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians and Oxford County residents testified Monday before Maine lawmakers, each group proposing new plans to bring gambling to their regions.

The Passamaquoddy Tribe has introduced a law to allow the operation of up to 100 slot machines on the days when the tribe offers high-stakes bingo, the Bangor Daily News reported. The Maliseet Indians are seeking the right to hold high-stakes bingo and beano games. And officials from Oxford County, led by Rep. Sawin Millett (R-Waterford), have pitched a new bill to bring a gambling resort to Western Maine, just six months after Maine voters defeated a similar proposal.

The Baldacci administration has opposed any expansion of gambling in Maine unless approved by voters in a statewide referendum, the paper reported.
