Gubernatorial race grows

Two more candidates are joining the race for governor.

Steve Abbott, who recently resigned as chief of staff for Sen. Susan Collins, is officially declaring his Republican candidacy today at events in Portland, Orono and Presque Isle, according to a press release. Abbott resigned from his 12-year stint as Collins' top aide on Jan. 6.

Meanwhile, former Husson University President William Beardsley is planning to run for governor as a Republican, according to the Bangor Daily News. Beardsley, who ended his 23-year tenure at Husson last month, filed paperwork with the Maine Ethics Commission on Friday and is expected to make a formal announcement later this week.
