Gov. John Baldacci yesterday received a report from his energy task force that suggests seven short-term solutions to help Mainers get through a tough winter.
The short-term recommendations made by the Pre-Emergency Energy Task Force, which Baldacci reactivated in June, include weatherizing 5,000 homes through distribution of "warm kits"; increasing energy audits of homes and businesses; expanding energy efficiency financing for schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and other agencies; setting up a 211 hotline to connect callers with an energy specialist who can give information about low-interest loans or emergency assistance; and creating local teams to help keep people safe and warm in their homes, according to a press release.
Gov. John Baldacci said much of the expense of the recommendations would fall to nonprofits and businesses willing to help. He has not decided yet whether he will call a special legislative session to address energy issues, the Associated Press reported.
