Tourism drop stalls York toll plaza plans

As traffic drops on Maine's highways, turnpike officials expect to hold off on a number of upgrades, including plans to build a new toll plaza in York.

The Maine Turnpike Authority recently said they had forecasted revenue growth of 2.5% this year, but that recent turnpike traffic figures -- including a 4% year-over-year drop in June -- is likely to contribute to a 1.75% drop in revenue, according to news website SeacoastOnline.com. "Quite frankly, I'm looking at all our projects," MTA Executive Director Paul Violette told the site.

The MTA's plans to replace the current York toll plaza with a larger array of tollbooths and lanes caused a firestorm of debate earlier this year. Local residents were concerned about the MTA's plans, which included acquiring private land and houses to build the plaza.
