Habitat for Humanity York County recognizes service with awards

Habitat for Humanity York County announced its Miles Freeman Awards for Service for 2024.

The award, named for Habitat for Humanity York County's founder, honors donors, volunteers and partners in the organization’s work who embody Freeman's passion and commitment to serving York County families through safe and affordable housing.

This year, Habitat for Humanity recognized three of its partners as Miles Freeman award recipients: the city of Sanford, Kennebunk Savings Bank and Beth Doty.

City of Sanford

Since 2017, Sanford staff and leadership has worked with Habitat to sell land affordably or help facilitate the sale of affordable land to Habitat for its homeownership program. Over the past seven years, Habitat has acquired six lots in Sanford that will support a total of at least 12 homes: four homes completed to date and another eight in the next few years.

Additionally, Sanford has partnered with Habitat to apply to the Community Development Block Grant program, resulting in funding of $400,000 to support the construction of six homes.

Kennebunk Savings

Habitat honored Kennebunk Savings for its partnership and support of Habitat’s mission. Kennebunk Savings regularly sends teams of volunteers to volunteer on Habitat build sites and in the ReStore.

The bank staff serve on committees and the board of directors, and Kennebunk Savings has given over $150,000 in support of Habitat’s mission.

‘Tireless advocate’

Beth Doty has been a tireless advocate for Habitat for Humanity York County.

Since 2009, she has served in many capacities: board member, finance committee member and chair of the family support committee. In her role on the family support committee, she has overseen 13 households achieving homeownership the Habitat’s homeownership program, and supported many others as they navigated the challenges of homeownership.

The awards were presented at Habitat for Humanity York County’s recent annual meeting and volunteer appreciation event.

Habitat for Humanity York County partners with local, low-income families in York County who show a demonstrated need for safe, affordable housing, a willingness to partner by completing “sweat equity” in the building of their own homes or the homes of other Habitat families, and the ability to repay an affordable mortgage. Homes are constructed using volunteer labor, donated materials and funds, and when completed the homeowners’ mortgage proceeds are recycled to support the construction of future Habitat for Humanity homes.
