HistoryIT hires Emily Cain as chief strategy officer

HistoryIT, a digital history pioneer based in Portland, announced today it has hired Emily Cain as its first chief strategy officer.

Cain, who served 10 years as a state legislator and lost twice to U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine, in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, begins her new job on Wednesday.

Founded five years ago by Kristen Gwinn-Becker, HistoryIT is credited with “creating the Dewey Decimal System for the 21st century." Its partners range from the Osher Map Library and the Connecticut Historical Society to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Last fall, the company received a lot of attention for its role in helping the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum release digital versions of an expansive collection of historic scrapbooks documenting Babe Ruth’s legendary career as the “Sultan of Swat.” The 25 volumes and over 1,400 pages of scrapbooks compiled by Christy Walsh, Ruth's manager, previously had only been available to researchers who made special arrangements to view them at the Cooperstown, N.Y., museum.

As CSO, Cain will lead the company’s strategic growth and business development efforts nationally and internationally, building on HistoryIT’s innovative technology and service offerings.

HistoryIT, a leading digital history company, provides a new approach to making historical collections more accessible, discoverable and useful.

“Emily Cain’s tenacity, vision and dynamic personality are exactly the kinds of traits HistoryIT needs as we expand our work to make digital history accessible to the public,” said Gwinn-Becker, the company’s CEO. “We are excited about the addition of Emily to our team. Her stellar public sector record, national relationships and proven ability to make deep connections in complex environments is a perfect fit for our business.”

During her 10 years as a state legislator and caucus leader in Maine, Cain served as minority leader of the Maine House of Representatives from 2010 to 2012.

“I’m proud to join HistoryIT and look forward to amplifying its impact across the country and around the world,” Cain said. “This is an innovative company with important solutions to offer business, government and nonprofit organizations. HistoryIT identified a need, created a solution and is now dominating the market. I am excited to dig in and accelerate the company’s momentum.”
