Horse protection nonprofit gets $200,000 charitable donation

The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals said Tuesday that it received a $200,000 grant to support its general operations and planned expansion of its equine rehabilitation facility in Windham.
The $1.8 million project, recently profiled in the Mainebiz Real Estate Insider, seeks to improve life for dozens of horses being cared for at the facility after being subject to abuse or neglect. While some animals receive sanctuary services and never fully recover, many are put up for adoption after they regain their strength.
The $200,000 donation was made by the Doree Taylor Charitable Foundation, created by Colorado native Doree Taylor, who lived in Brunswick and died in 2009 at age 97.
The grant funds will be used to fund equine care and the expansion project, entitled “Help, Hope, Home.”
The project consolidates an indoor training arena and humane education center with administrative offices, serving the horses and the people who care about them.
The society, a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) charity formed in 1872 to protect the horses who pulled Portland’s streetcars, receives no federal, state or local funding. It does not charge for its services and seeks no reimbursement from any public source.
Visitors are welcome every day, from 1-4 p.m., at the facility in Windham.
