Husson University is receiving another major nursing grant, bringing the total amount it has received from a federal agency to more than $1.4 million this summer.
The Bangor-based university announced on Thursday the $753,000 grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, just a week after announcing a $684,000 grant from the same agency.
The grant will help the university expand an interprofessional educational initiative to include students from beyond its nursing graduate students. The program, which aims to illustrate “the increasing importance of health care professionals from various disciplines working together to address” patient health and care issues, will now include students from Husson’s School of Pharmacy and all schools within its College of Health and Education.
The grant also will aid Husson in holding a statewide consortium of inter-professional education this October, where 12 other educational institutions with health care programs will join and discuss how to improve communication and education for health care professionals.
“We want to produce an interprofessional learning environment focused on improving patient safety,” Mary Jude, coordinator of the university’s graduate nursing programs, said in a prepared statement. “By creating a process that encourages collaboration, mutual respect and shared values between undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students pursuing degrees in medical-related disciplines, and combining this with input and feedback from other professionals and program leaders, Husson is helping to improve the quality of healthcare.”
