Husson nets $20K grant for cardiac research

The Husson University School of Pharmacy has received a $20,000 national grant for research aiming to improve the outcomes of patients receiving cardiac stents.

The Bangor school said Friday that the funding is part of a highly competitive grant program from the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation. Husson was only one of six schools nationwide and one of two New England schools to receive a grant from the foundation’s Pharmacy Partners Program.

The foundation’s grant will support research conducted by Evan Williams, an assistant professor of pharmacy practice. His research will involve improving the outcome of patients who receive cardiac stents. Stents, which are small, expandable tubes, are used in patients with coronary artery disease to open arteries narrowed by plaque build-up, according to WebMD.

Rodney Larson, the pharmacy school’s founding dean, said in a statement that the research is being done in collaboration with Eastern Maine Medical Center and Miller Drug, a community pharmacy chain with four stores in the Bangor area.

“The project will create a strong link between a local hospital and community pharmacies to help improve the transition of care for a group of high-risk patients,” he said.
