Dahlia Lynn was recently recommended to serve as the University of Southern Maine’s interim associate provost for academic affairs, pending approval by the University of Maine System Board of Trustees.

Common Good Ventures, a nonprofit services provider in Portland, recently elected Tom Davis, CEO of Skills, Inc., Susan Reid Russell, nonprofit consultant, and Bob Schools, senior vice president of retail operations at Hannaford Bros. to its board. The Portland Museum of Art recently elected the following new members to its 2011–2012 board of trustees: Melanie Stewart Cutler; John Moore; and William Williams. Rosalyne Bernstein and Peggy Osher were named honorary trustees. The museum also elected the following officers: John Isacke, president; Hans Underdahl, chairman; Anna Wells, vice president; Walter Goldfarb, vice president at large; Christopher Robinson, vice president at large; Robert Nanovic, treasurer; William Ryan, assistant treasurer; and James Houle, secretary.

Spotlight

Mercy Hospital in Portland was recently recognized by the Maine State Employee Health Commission as the only Tier 1 hospital in Greater Portland, making it the preferred provider for state workers, according to a release from the hospital.

This recognition establishes Mercy as a preferred provider for 40,000 state workers and their dependents, as well as highlighting its performance as a preferred provider over the past five years.

With this designation, state workers receive financial incentives through the State Health Commission when they use Mercy Hospital. Frank Johnson, executive director of the State Employee Health Commission, says that the tiered rating system will be changed this summer to help contain state health care costs.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded the following awards: $400,000 to Augusta for cleanup at the former American Tissue Mill site, Parcel 1 and 2; $400,000 to Belfast for community-wide assessment; $200,000 to Canton for cleanup at the former Brindis Leather Co. mill and Whitney Brook dam site; $400,000 to Greater Portland Council of Governments for community-wide assessment; $1 million to Kennebec Valley Council of Governments for community-wide revolving loan fund supplemental funding; and $550,000 to Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission for community-wide revolving loan fund supplemental funding.

Breast Care Specialists of Maine in Portland, a department of Mercy Hospital, has received a full, three-year accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, which is administered by the American College of Surgeons.

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative recently awarded the Maine Department of Environmental Protection $769,092, managed by the Efficiency Maine Trust, to fund programs to improve energy efficiency, accelerate the deployment of renewable energy technologies and provide direct assistance to energy consumers.

The city of Rockland is receiving $2.7 million for sewer upgrades. Funding comes from a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Wastewater Disposal direct loan of $2.4 million and a grant of $261,500.

Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor recently announced continued accreditation status from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, an accrediting commission agency that provides institutional accreditation on a regional basis. The community college also announced a new scholarship program targeted to meet the unique needs of adult students. The scholarship provides full tuition for two classes for the upcoming 2011-12 academic year for adult students with either a high school diploma or GED, who have been out of high school for five years and have never attended college.
