Insurance chief serves notice to private insurers

Maine's new insurance superintendent called for tighter oversight of companies and clearer communication with the consumer in an address she delivered Sunday night in Skowhegan.

Speaking at the Kennebec Valley Organization, Mila Kofman said the lack of transparency in private health care policies puts Mainers at risk, reported the Morning Sentinel. Among her concerns are policies that are unaffordable for lower- and middle-income people; consumers who don't have access to full copies of a policy before they enroll; confusing language; and benefits that can be cut back after enrollment.

Kofman heads the Maine Bureau of Insurance, which regulates the insurance industry, examining companies' finances, products and policies.
