Jay officials are working with the state to find a way to keep Wausau paper mill jobs.
As of last fall, the mill provided jobs for 235 people, until a weak market and declining sales caused mill owners to announce machine shutdowns, and finally, its May 31 closure and sale. Ruth Marden, town manager, told the Sun Journal that she has received inquiries about the mill property, and is working with local legislators and the state's Department of Economic and Community Development to preserve jobs and keep the mill open.
Yesterday, the Mosinee, Wis.-based Wausau announced a first-quarter net loss of $1.4 million compared with a net loss of $6.8 million in the prior year. Net sales decreased 20% to $238.8 million, while shipments declined 26% due to anticipated volume reductions resulting from mill closures and a weak demand in several markets, according to a company release. In December 2008, Wausau completed the shutdown of one of its two paper machines at the Jay mill. In March, it announced full closure of the mill and the intent to sell it. The company statement identified about $21 million in anticipated costs to close the mill.
