Ketcha Outdoors has hired a veteran recreation educator as the nonprofit's new executive director.
“Having received over 70 applications for executive director, the Ketcha Outdoors community feels very fortunate to have Laragh Kavanaugh accept this exciting challenge of leading the Scarborough and Portland campuses into our next chapter of service to the Greater Portland community,” said Ketcha Outdoors Board President Jay Evans in a prepared release.
Kavanaugh has over 20 years of leadership experience in youth development, from guiding outdoor expeditions for Outward Bound -- an education nonprofit -- to leading international programs in India and Ghana. She's also directed operations for the Maine-based Council International Educational Exchange.
“Ketcha Outdoors plays an important role in our community and builds caring, confident youth who respect the natural world,” Kavanaugh said. “Having grown up in Maine and since becoming a parent, I understand the positive impact the natural world has on youth and how important access to quality outdoor programs is to Maine families and communities.”
Ketcha Outdoors has provided kids of all ages with deep connections to the land, a vibrant community, and the confidence to create their sense of place in the world. The outdoor education organization is best known through Camp Ketcha in Scarborough, which houses a summer day camp, a preschool and pre-K programs, after-school care and other nature-based programming.
According to Alaena Dunn, director of development, Ketcha’s 2022 budget is $2.4 million. The organization employs around 30 year-round staff and about 130 during the summer season.
