Law to shield minors' info from marketers on hold

A controversial law that prohibits the use of personal information about minors for marketing purposes without parental consent is being referred to the Maine Senate's judiciary committee for review before the next full session of the Legislature convenes in January.

A spokeswoman for Attorney General Janet Mills was quoted by the Wall Street Journal saying Mills will not prosecute companies who do not comply with the law, which is scheduled to take effect Sept. 12, in the interim. The law prohibits the collection of personal data such as name, address, Social Security number, driver's license number and email address from minors without verifiable parental consent.

A group of businesses, who see the law as a restriction of their ability to do business in Maine, filed an injunction last week seeking to block it, the paper reported.
