Maine awarded $2M in Pfizer settlement

Drug giant Pfizer will pay Maine about $2 million as part of the record $2.3 billion civil and criminal settlement against the company over unlawful prescription drug promotions.

The money is a result of two separate agreements that Maine and other states and the federal government reached with Pfizer in the country's largest-ever health care fraud settlement, according to a press release from the Maine Attorney General's office. Maine will receive $1.4 million in restitution and other payments as part of the first agreement, which settles allegations that Pfizer and its subsidiaries paid kickbacks to health care professionals and improperly marketed certain drugs.

In the second and unrelated settlement, Maine will receive nearly $500,000 as part of a $33 million multistate agreement with Pfizer for its alleged illegal promotion of a schizophrenia drug for off-label uses, the release states.
