Lawmakers hear report on agency indiscretions

The Legislature's Appropriations Committee today will hear a new report on alleged misuse of federal funds by the Maine State Library, the Maine Arts Commission, the Maine State Museum and the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.

The report from the Office of the State Controller claims a former Maine Arts Commission employee spent about $1,000 of state money for personal use, the Maine State Museum improperly transferred more than $2 million to a nonprofit called Friends of the Maine State Museum and a federal employee of the Maine State Library was assigned to work on non-federal programs, among other findings, according to the Kennebec Journal.

The Appropriations Committee is set to review the report today as part of an examination of accounting practices at the four agencies after a November report found $4,000 was misused.
