Lawmakers mull minimum wage hike

The Legislature's Labor Committee is scheduled today to hold a hearing on a proposal to boost Maine's minimum wage by more than a dollar by 2009.

After raising Maine's minimum wage to $7 an hour in October, the committee is now reviewing a bill to increase Maine's minimum wage again to $7.70 an hour in 2008, and to $8.40 in 2009, according to the Associated Press. The federal minimum wage, by contrast, is $5.85, and will increase to $7.25 an hour by 2009.

The committee delayed action on the minimum wage earlier this year after a heated debate in a public hearing between advocates for low-wage workers and business owners who say a hike would hurt the economy, the AP reported.
