Lewiston will use HUD funds to rehab up to 1,500 housing units

The Lewiston Housing Authority will use almost $1.8 million in federal funds to revitalize local housing projects, using a block-by-block strategy that aims to replace and renovate 1,500 housing units in the Tree Streets and downtown neighborhoods.

Lewiston, the only Maine city to receive funding through the HUD Choice Neighborhoods Initiative, will use the money to renovate housing at Lafayette Park, Maple Knoll, the Oxford Street complexes and other locations in the targeted areas.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, announced the funding April 7 through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"It is so encouraging to see the positive impact that these grants are having in Lewiston," Collins said. “I look forward to continuing to work with city leaders in Lewiston as they further implement their long-term strategy for community renewal, because creating vibrant, thriving neighborhoods throughout our state is a benefit to all Mainers."

The grant adds to the city’s previous Choice Neighborhoods Initiative Implementation Grant award of $30 million in 2021 for Lewiston’s Tree Streets Plan.

The Tree Streets plan included a block-by-block revitalization strategy to replace and renovate 1,500 housing units in the Tree Streets and downtown neighborhoods in Lewiston. The grant would transform neighborhoods dealing with lead paint, families in poverty and low-performing schools, according to a March 2021 release, as well as concepts to "support residents ... with additional workforce, education and health care resources."
