The Island Explorer shuttle bus system that has transported visitors of Acadia National Park through Maine’s only national park and surrounding communities for the past 17 years has received an additional $1 million boost from the outdoor retailer L.L.Bean.
The 30-strong fleet of low-emission, propane-powered buses has carried over 6 million passengers since its inception, reducing private vehicle trips by nearly 2.3 million and eliminated over 32 tons of smog-causing pollutants, according to a release from Friends of Acadia, the organization awarded the funds.
“L.L.Bean has deep roots in Maine and a long history of supporting conservation projects.” Janet Wyper, manager of community relations for L.L.Bean said in a statement about the funding. “It’s a natural fit for our company to sponsor the Island Explorer, which has enabled millions of people to enjoy one of Maine’s and the nation’s greatest natural assets, Acadia National Park, in an environmentally-friendly manner.”
Since 2002, L.L.Bean has donated more than $4 million to the Island Explorer bus program, allowing service to be extended through Columbus Day each year.
