L.L.Bean settlement to wreath maker reduced

L.L.Bean now has to pay a Down East wreath maker $657,000 to settle a lawsuit, instead of the nearly $1 million originally ordered. A judge reduced the amount after reviewing financial information in the original lawsuit.

The Maine Business and Consumer Court in February ruled L.L.Bean owed Harrington-based Worcester Wreath $961,811 for the purchase of components for balsam wreaths that the Freeport retailer never sold. L.L.Bean had sold Worcester’s wreaths for 26 years and in 2008 ordered more products than it was able to sell due to the recession.

In February, L.L.Bean spokeswoman Carolyn Beem disputed the amount of the settlement. She told the Bangor Daily News the company has always been willing to pay Worcester Wreath and that the reduced amount is on par with what L.L.Bean offered to Worcester prior to litigation.  Worcester Wreath owner Merrill Worcester said his attorneys are reviewing the new judgment.
