LURC leans toward Plum Creek approval

Two days of public hearings on Plum Creek Timber Co.'s development proposal for Moosehead Lake ended with a tentative step toward approval.

Maine's Land Use Regulation Commission suggested yesterday that it could approve the plan to develop 20,000 acres as long as more than 430,000 acres is permanently conserved and development in some areas is reduced, according to the Bangor Daily News. Seattle-based Plum Creek hopes to build 975 house lots and two large resorts along Maine's largest lake. "In my mind, nobody is going to get everything that they want," LURC Commissioner Rebecca Kurtz said, according to the paper. "But this proposal seems to offer the most benefit for every entity."

However, the proposal is far from approved. Plum Creek may not agree to the changes LURC is asking for. One of LURC's major requests, for Plum Creek to commit to conserving massive swaths of land before receiving permits to build, emerged as a key sticking point with the company. Plum Creek had planned to commit to conservation after the development plan was approved, the paper reported.
