Maine Film Festival to feature Making it in Maine Day

Courtesy Maine International Film Festival Waterville's 10-day Maine International Film Festival, hosted by the Maine Film Center, draws thousands to the city. More than 100 films will be screened, at Railroad Square Cinema and the Waterville Opera House.

A day in Waterville’s 10-day Maine International Film Festival will be devoted to Maine’s growing film industry.

Making it in Maine Day, which will be held Saturday, will be anchored by the 41st Annual Maine Student Film & Video Festival and the Maine Film Forum.

The film festival, hosted by the Maine Film Center, draws thousands to the city showing nearly 100 films at Railroad Square Cinema and the Waterville Opera House.

“Making it in Maine Day is a celebration of all-things-film in Maine, from reel to reality,” said MIFF Director Mike Perreault in a news release. “Bringing together filmmakers, educators who teach and use filmmaking in the classroom, and leaders of the festivals that exhibit these works in Maine is a unique experience that can only be found at MIFF.”

The film forum, sponsored by the Maine Film Office, runs from 9 a.m. to noon, with an educational and networking event for MIFF filmmaker guests, film festival leaders, educators and Maine film industry representatives. It will include a presentation on the history of women behind the scenes in Hollywood, as well as breakout workshops and discussion sessions.

The student festival is a free event, which culminates in an awards presentation at 12:30 p.m.

The Maine Student Film & Video Festival is a juried competition, with scholarships and prizes. Following the ceremony, a reception for the student filmmakers will be held at Jorgensen’s Café, on Main Street in Waterville.

Making it in Maine Day also includes screenings of films made by Mainers, shot on location in Maine, or featuring Maine subjects.

A feature of the day is the premiere of “The Reprogramming of Jeremy,” with introduction by central Maine writer and actor Bobby Keniston, which will screen at 12:30 p.m. at Railroad Square Cinema.

The Opera House will host a screening of Maine Shorts at 3:30 p.m.

At 6:30 p.m., “Modified,” a documentary-memoir shot partially in Maine will screen at the Opera House.

The film festival begins Friday and continues through Sunday, July 22. The full schedule and other information is available at www.miff.org.
