Maine gets second broadband grant

Maine is receiving nearly $1.8 million for a broadband planning and mapping project.

The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration is giving the ConnectME Authority $1.3 million for a two-year broadband data collection and mapping project, and another $440,000 for a five-year broadband planning project, according to press releases from Reps. Mike Michaud's and Chellie Pingree's offices. The money comes from the State Broadband Data and Development Grant Program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and is intended to help states plan broadband expansion efforts. The data collected by ConnectME will be displayed on a national broadband map for policymakers and consumers, according to the releases.

The announcement comes on the heels of a $25.4 million grant awarded to a separate rural broadband expansion project, dubbed the Three Ring Binder project.
