Maine to host int'l ocean energy summit

Maine has been chosen to host the 2009 EnergyOcean Conference, an international summit expected to bring more than 300 people to Maine from around the world to discuss opportunities for ocean-based energy.

The announcement was made yesterday at this year's conference being held in Galveston, Texas, by Elaine Scott, director of communications and marketing for Maine's Department of Economic and Community Development, according to a press release from Gov. John Baldacci's office. The DECD is a sponsor of this year's conference and has a booth representing the state and Maine businesses and nonprofits involved in ocean energy, including Bigelow Labs, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Cianbro. Next year's conference will be held in June.

Maine was chosen as next year's host because of the amount of activity in the state involving renewable ocean-based energy, especially in the areas of tidal, wind power and algae-derived biofuels, the summit's organizer said in the release.
