Mainebiz received two national awards for publication design by Art Director Matt Selva.
The 2022 Editorial Excellence Awards were announced by the Alliance of Area Business Publishers on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
AABP, based in Norwalk, Conn., represents around 70 regional and local business publications with a combined circulation of more than 1.2 million.
Entries in design, online, journalism and best-of-show categories were judged by faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
In the "Best Feature Layout" category for publications of all sizes, Mainebiz was awarded a third-place, bronze award for last year's Next List issue, designed by Selva.
"Well-lit, technically solid environmental portraits are sized and positioned effectively throughout the layouts," the judges noted in their remarks. "Good typographic detailing and use of red spot color provide multiple points of entry. There also is good attention to visual hierarchy."
Mainebiz also won bronze for Best Overall Design — Medium Tabloids," for four issues published in 2021.
"Big picture play dominates the covers and images are sized well throughout the book," the judges said of Selva’s work. "The table of contents is strong, readable and easily navigated. Sophisticated typographic treatments, including page or section headers, headline treatments and supplemental icon visuals, set a comfortable pace for moving through the magazine."
Selva, a graduate of the Maine College of Art & Design, has been with Mainebiz for 12 years.
"Matt is an exceptional talent and I'm always amazed how he can take varied elements — stories, photos and graphics — and make them look good together," said Mainebiz Editor Peter Van Allen. "The awards are just a validation of what we see every day."
Two Mainebiz sister publications, also owned by New England Business Media, were recognized in AABP's 2022 Editorial Excellence Awards.
The Worcester (Mass.) Business Journal received five awards, including first place for "Best Newspaper — Medium Tabloids," while the Hartford (Conn). Business Journal received two awards.
Way to go, Mainebiz and Matt!
