MaineHealth names chief medical officer with 25 years of experience

After a national search, Portland-based MaineHealth, Maine’s largest health care system, has hired Charles Morris as the new chief medical officer for the southern region.

Morris will succeed Joel Botler, who will retire in January after 45 years at the medical center.

“I am excited to join the team at MaineHealth,” said Morris. “The focus on advancing the health of residents of Maine is ambitious, inspiring and exactly the opportunity I’m seeking. I’ve spent my career honing my skills of advocacy for patients and providers alike, and there is no better place to put those skills to work than with the team at MaineHealth.”

In this new role, Morris will oversee clinical operations in MaineHealth’s southern region, reducing care variation and promoting the highest quality, patient-centered practice at Maine Medical Center. He also plans to continue practicing medicine as a community primary care provider.

“Dr. Morris shares our MaineHealth vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America,” said Adrian Moran, MaineHealth chief medical and transformation officer. “His years of leadership experience at a major academic medical center, commitment to quality and mentorship capabilities as a practicing physician, made him stand out as an ideal clinical leader at MaineHealth’s largest hospital.”

The practicing care physician has 25 years of experience and has been an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School since 2008.

Prior to joining MaineHealth, Morris served as chief medical officer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Massachusetts since 2022 and was previously the associate chief medical officer.

The Massachusetts native received his bachelor’s in psychology from Princeton University, his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and his Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.

MaineHealth has more than 23,000 employees, including more than 2,000 physicians and advanced practice professionals across more than 250 practice locations.
