Mainers optimistic about future

Consumers in Maine are reporting weak economic confidence levels, but at least are not showing the drastic declines reported nationally between the months of July and October.

Polling firm Market Decisions in Portland has released data from its latest telephone survey, finding that about 57% of the Mainers surveyed said they are worse off financially than they were a year ago, compared to 55% in July, according to a press release. The number of Mainers who expect to be worse off next year, however, dropped from 33% in July to 17% in October. The Mainers who expect to be better off next year rose from 12% in July to 21% in October.

"We saw a historic decline in confidence last winter and spring," commented Curtis Mildner, president of Market Decisions, in a press release. "Based on the Wall Street financial crisis and the stock market decline, we were expecting still further declines. While the mood of consumers is not good, at least it has not become worse."
