Maine's jobless rate continues skyward

Maine's unemployment rate jumped to 6.3% in November, up from 5.7% in October and 4.9% in November 2007.

Between October and November, Maine lost 2,400 nonfarm wage and salary jobs, with the most substantial declines reported by the retail trade and manufacturing industries, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Labor. The net loss of 2,400 seasonally-adjusted nonfarm wage and salary jobs between October and November contributed to a decline of 7,100 jobs over the past year. "Maine labor market conditions weakened considerably in November as the national recession deepened," DOL Commissioner Laura Fortman said in the release.

November jobless rates in New Hampshire and Massachusetts were 4.3% and 5.9%, respectively. The national unemployment rate was 6.7% in November, up from 6.5% in October and 4.9% in November 2007.
