ME dead last on Forbes best for biz list

Maine has dropped to dead last in the latest Forbes magazine ranking of "Best States for Business."

Maine dropped from No. 41 last year to No. 50, thanks to "growth prospects in Maine [that] have deteriorated relative to the rest of the country," according to Forbes. The magazine cited a 1.3% expected annual job growth rate over the next five years, one of the worst projections in the nation, and an uptick in the number of businesses closing in the past three years. The magazine develops its ranking using six business-related categories -- costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life -- with costs of labor, energy and taxes weighted the most heavily. Maine achieved its highest ranking in the quality of life category, at No. 16, and earned better-than-average marks in labor supply. But it ranked 47th in business costs and 48th for regulatory environment, pulling down its overall score.

The top three states for business were Utah, Virginia and North Carolina.
