Portland, Caribou net growth grants

Portland and Caribou are receiving a total of $2.4 million in federal grants to develop community-integrated urban growth plans.

The Greater Portland Council of Governments is getting $1.6 million for urban development work that includes improving economic development and transportation, boosting energy conservation and promoting equity among residents, according to the Portland Press Herald. The council, along with 26 other government and community groups in southern Maine, spent a year working on the grant application and will spend three years generating community input to develop an implementation plan for smart urban development.

The Northern Maine Development Commission will use its $800,000 to create a regional development plan with nonprofits in Washington and Aroostook counties, according to the paper.
