ME's jobless rate falls

Maine's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 4.7% in April, down from 5% in March.

The number of seasonally-adjusted nonfarm wage and salary jobs, one component of total employment, fell between March and April by 3,400 jobs, with the largest losses recorded in leisure and hospitality services, retail and construction, the release said. However, between April 2007 and April 2008, the total number of nonfarm wage and salary jobs increased by 1,100.

Over the past year the unemployment rate in Maine and the rest of the country has been increasing, Maine Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman said in a press release. So while the month-over-month unemployment figures are encouraging, she warns that the state would need to see the jobless rate decrease several months in a row to call it a trend.
