Metro area unemployment falls

Unemployment rates fell in Maine's three metro areas in October, following a nationwide trend that illustrates the job market is improving in urban areas.

Bangor's not seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate fell from 6.9% in October 2010 to 6.1% in 2011; Lewiston-Auburn's dropped from 7.3% to 6.7%; and Portland-South Portland-Biddeford's decreased from 5.7% to 5.5%, according to The Associated Press. Overall, Maine's unemployment dropped from an average of 6.9% in 2010 to 6.6% in 2011.

Three-quarters of large U.S. cities saw unemployment rates fall in October, the U.S. Department of Labor reported yesterday. A total of 281 metro areas saw rates decline, while 57 saw them rise and 34 held flat.
