MITC plans trade mission to China
Gov. Paul LePage will lead a trade mission to China later this year, timed to coincide with the Asian Seafood Exposition in Hong Kong.
The September trade mission will also include Shanghai and surrounding areas, according to a press release from the Maine International Trade Center, which will coordinate the trade mission along with the U.S. Commerce Department. Maine seafood companies exhibited at last year’s seafood show, and live and frozen lobster exports to China grew from $110,000 in 2010 to nearly $1.5 million in 2011. Overall, U.S. exports to China reached record levels last year at $103.8 billion, and the market is Maine’s third largest, receiving $275 million of Maine exports last year.
The trade mission will be LePage’s first as governor and is the first time a Maine governor has visited China. The mission will focus on natural resources products like pulp, paper and seafood, as well as international education opportunities.
