Monmouth workers eligible for TAA funds
Former workers at Newark Paperboard Products in Monmouth are now eligible for benefits under the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud.
About 20 people lost their jobs when the plant, which makes paper tubes, closed earlier this year. They’re now able to get job-placement assistance, skills training and other aid through the federal program, which helps U.S. workers who have lost their jobs because of foreign trade.
Officials at New Jersey-based Newark Group, which owned the plant, didn't give a reason for closing the plant other than citing a desire for efficiency. The plant's work was transferred to its other recycled-packaging plants in 16 states, Canada, Spain and Germany. The Newark Group in 1997 bought the Yorktowne Paper Mill and Gardiner Paperboard, which closed in 2001. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2010, emerging in August the same year with two loans totaling $170 million.
