Mussel farm shuts down, lays off 40

Great Eastern Mussel Farms Inc. in Tenants Harbor said this morning it will immediately shut down and lay off its 40 full-time employees.

The company's decision was driven by several years of increased regulatory challenges, competition from Canadian mussel growers and rising energy costs, according to a press release from Great Eastern General Manager Michael E. Hallundbaek.

Great Eastern Mussel Farms was founded in 1978 by Endicott "Chip" Davison.
