The U.S. Navy’s remote training school is considering Redington Township in the Rangeley Lakes area as one of five possible East Coast locations for a ballistic missile interceptor site.
The Sun Journal reported the five possible sites exclude the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, which was previously considered as a missile interceptor site. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins told the paper that the Navy is now considering that site for a radar installation.
In a letter to Collins, Vice Adm. James Syring wrote that the Navy’s Missile Defense Agency will now gather data on the five potential sites to assess their suitability for deploying another interceptor.
The Navy will also complete Environmental Impact Statements for the sites to meet federal requirements, a process that will take 18 to 24 months once the site study is complete.
The Navy is also considering the Camp Ravenna Joint Military Training Center in Ohio, Camp Ethan Allen Training Site in Vermont, Fort Custer Training Center in Michigan and Fort Drum in New York.
