Brewer-based Northern Light Health has received a $50,000 gift from M&T Bank's charitable arm to support construction of a new 50-bed pediatric inpatient wing at Northern Light Acadia Hospital.
The goal of the Acadia For All Campaign is to expand behavioral health services at the Bangor psychiatric hospital, for Mainers of all ages in all areas of the state.
“While Acadia is located in Penobscot County, 67% of our inpatient population comes from the 15 other counties throughout the state and 14% are residents of Maine’s two southern-most counties,” said the hospital's president, Mark Lukens.
“At a time when individuals in crisis, including children, are spending days or even weeks in emergency departments waiting for a bed at a psychiatric hospital, this expansion is critical to the state.”
Plans calls for 50 existing rooms to be upgraded to private adult inpatient rooms, allowing Acadia Hospital to fully utilize its 100-bed license. The campaign will also help enhance outpatient and pediatric programming, increased access to geriatric care and workforce development.
“M&T Bank recognizes that healthy communities are the foundation for long-term success,” said Tim Wade, regional president, M&T Bank. “Our commitment to Northern Light Acadia Hospital will result in more of our fellow Mainers having access to the health services they need.”
Northern Light, the state's second-largest health care system, comprises 10 member hospitals with 987 licensed beds; a physician-led medical group; eight nursing homes with 585 long-term beds; five emergency transport members and 37 primary care locations. The company employs more than 12,000 people in Maine.
Northern Light Acadia Hospital ranks No. 9 among Maine’s largest hospitals according to the 2023 Mainebiz Book of Lists. That ranking is based on the number of licensed acute-care beds.
