Northern Light breaks ground on Greenville hospital replacement

6 people with shovels and ribbons Courtesy / Northern Light Health CA Dean and Northern Light Health leaders and staff gathered this week with donors, local and regional officials, and community members to break ground on the Moosehead Lake Region’s new hospital.

Northern Light Health this week broke ground on a $23.1 million replacement for CA Dean Hospital, a 25-bed critical access facility in the Moosehead Lake Region town of Greenville.

“We’ve been anticipating the start of construction for a long time, and now, the day is finally here,” said Marie Vienneau, president of CA Dean Hospital and senior vice president of Northern Light Health, in a news release.

A new main building will house five private rooms with acute/swing beds, a 24/7 emergency department, and imaging and lab services. A new, separate ambulance station and a helicopter pad will also be built.

The existing east wing will be renovated to house 10 private rooms with swing beds. Northern Light said the new design and technology of the hospital will streamline care while also providing rapid access to clinicians in Bangor and beyond.

Northern Light CA Dean Hospital in Greenville broke ground this week on a $23.1 million upgrade.

“The new hospital will provide us with better tools and a modern space that meets today’s standards of care,” said Joseph Babbitt, a CA Dean physician and chief of the medical staff.

More than $6.2 million of the $23.1 million project is supported by philanthropy through a capital campaign, Preserving the Promise, which was completed in 10 months. Hundreds of individuals, local businesses, foundations and hospital staff donated to the campaign, including the late philanthropist Dr. Peter Buck, who provided $4 million in support.

Both the new main building and the ambulance station will be named in honor of the Buck Family.

“We’re grateful for Dr. Buck’s extraordinary generosity, and thankful to every person who contributed to the campaign,” said Vienneau.

The new facility, proposed last year, is expected to open in the summer of 2023. Renovations to the east wing and site demolition are expected to be complete in 2024. WBRC Inc. is the project architect and Dunbar & Brawn is the general contractor.

The project is one of a number of Northern Light redevelopments at hospitals in Blue Hill, Greenville, Bangor, Ellsworth and Portland.

Older facilities and increasing patient volume, faced with new technologies and care protocols, are driving new investment in hospitals around Maine.
